What are those museum visitors doing in the pool?

August 5th, 2009 11:20pm by flipvine

The 21st Century Museum of Conteporary Art in Kanazawa, Japan looks like a damn cool place to hang out.  It has community gathering spaces, of which the following has got to be the coolest ever.  Thanks to Clementine for posting about it. You can find more pics of it here.

The week in review

August 1st, 2009 04:43pm by flipvine

Came across too much interesting stuff this week to write a full blog post about everything.  So I’m gonna post a few of them with little writeups here for your linkage pleasure: rzwi5tudhq

The best reaction ever – ladies and gentlemen, concert/festival season is upon us.  bestreacti54036Unfortunately, there are things out there that produce reactions such as the one you see in the image on the right.  Click and find out what caused that award-winning face.  I’ll give you three hints of what its not: its not the ShamWow guy wiping up the mess left by a hooker, its not a bunch of cracked out naked dudes in a pool, its not even a bunch of drunk fools operating on each other at home.

Thailand_07_28_09_Winn_supernatural_editI had no idea there were places in the world where superstitions and the occult ran as rampant as.. hmm.. memes on the Internet.  But it looks like in Thailand the supernatural gets politicians votes and is pretty much the engine oil of society. Yeah, its that bad, here’s a quote:

The Thai press already mines humor from the more-absurd displays — and got great mileage when a former prime minister’s wife, on a soothsayer’s advice, carried around a plush toy elephant clad in diamond earrings and a lacy wedding dress.

milesfisherIf you’re a fan of American Psycho or The Talking Heads, you’ll want to check out this excellent music video by Miles Fisher – you can download his music on his site for free btw.  The guy looks like he’s into acting as well, so I’m looking forward to some more quality videos from him.  And since he already looks like Christian Bale, I’m putting my $0.02 suggestion right here – Batman : The Dark Knight – the musical.  Or maybe a Terminator music video?  The latter seems like it’d probably cost too much, but I think The Dark Knight might be attainable.

When the going gets tough, the dogs get going

July 29th, 2009 11:46pm by flipvine

Dogs pee – nothing special here. But every once in a while they get creative and this ladies and gentlemen, borders on .. art? For instance, take a look at Chester, the incredible peeing dog. I’m quite sure the dog’s trying to write something, but I’m no expert in graffiti, so I can’t quite make it out:

Drunken Tractor Heist

July 8th, 2009 12:21pm by stultzie

www.reuters.com

BERLIN (Reuters) – A drunk German sparked a slow-speed police chase after stealing a tractor to get home from a nightclub after his girlfriend left without him, said police, who used pepper spray to try to stop the vehicle.

“After his girlfriend abandoned him in a night club, the 23-year-old driver, who doesn’t own a license, commandeered the vehicle to make his way home,” a police spokesman said on Monday.

Six police cars began trailing the tractor, which was chugging along at 20 km (12 miles) an hour, after they were alerted to the theft at about 5 a.m. Saturday.

Officers tried holding up stop signs and directing pepper spray through the open window to bring the driver to a halt.

They then tried unsuccessfully to end his getaway by throwing nail belts on the road, but the tractor’s tires proved too thick, said the police spokesman.

The 40-minute chase finally came to an end when officers shot at the tractor’s tires after it rammed into a police car and collided with another vehicle.

I love so many things about this article. Firstly, I get a kick out of the thrill of being young, drunk and German. Makes me feel, ohhh I don’t know, proud to be German? Yeah, I’ll go with that.

Secondly, I love the progression of  tactics used to bring the operator to  a halt:

  1. They tried holding up stop signs… seriously? HE STOLE A TRACTOR so you wave stop signs at him? So good.
  2. Clearly time for the pepper spray when that fails…through the open window. Skills.
  3. Booby trap the road with nail belts…obviously just for shits and giggles
  4. before  shooting the tires…

SUCCESS!

And all this at 12mph.

Sea lion hijacks patrol boat

July 3rd, 2009 02:02pm by stultzie

2559458

After reports the animal had tried to attack a local boy, the police enticed it onto their boat and headed out into the bay to try and drop it off.

On their way out the boat’s lights flashed, the emergency pump and other equipment began turning on and off and the boat lurched from side to side.

The curious deputies left the boat’s bridge to check it out and found the sea lion sitting in the foul-weather steering station below and randomly flicking switches.

I wasn’t aware that sea lions attack small children. I always thought of them as calm and friendly creatures. Shows how much I know, apparently. I cant say I knew they could drive boats either though, so perhaps this lion was a special case.

I now have an image I’d like to share because it’s funny and well, I’d like to share it!

That, and I doubt ill ever have a more appropriate transition into doing so…
